Finding Straw Bales

Straw can be found at your local stock feed or animal feed store. Many of these stores have straw bales available for various reasons such bedding for small animals.

Your local garden center may also have straw in stock or have the ability to order a few bales on special order. Alternatively you could look in your local paper to see if there is any available for private sale.

If you live in a more rural area and you know someone that does, You could contact a local farmer that might have some old bales lying around.

What type of straw

There are several different types of straw available depending on your location.
I recommend using one of the following:

  • Barley Straw
  • Oaten Straw
  • Wheat Straw

do not recommend using:

  • Grass hay
  • Pea straw
  • Lucerne mulch

If you are unsure of the difference, please ask a staff member for assistance in identifying the correct variety.
